Tips For Building the Perfect Chicken Coop

Do you want to build a chicken coop in time for the spring or summer? Here are some tips for building the best coop for your chickens.

Keeping chickens can add many wonderful treats to your farm or garden. It is not very difficult to build a coop for your chickens. You can add more and more to it as the weeks go by and you learn about what your chickens need and want. Once you know you want chickens, do some research, build a simple coop, enjoy fresh eggs, and continue to improve. Not only do chickens provide delicious fresh eggs, they can also do wonders to your garden by scratching and mixing soil.

Roosts

Chickens enjoy sleeping as much as any other animal. They enjoy sleeping on perches, so it is a good idea to install a horizontal bar across the coop where they can crouch and go to sleep.

Nesting Boxes

Chickens need nesting boxes so they can safely lay their eggs. There should be warm insulation (straw) in these nests. One nesting box per three hens is a good suggestion.

Food and Water

To prevent spillages and accidents, it is a good idea to keep their feeders off the ground.

Insulation and Bedding
Straw is the most common bedding material because it is absorbent, cheap and soft for the chickens. Wood shavings and chips are also good options. They will require less insulation in the summer so it is important not to let your chickens overheat.

Ventilation

Remember to install windows in your coop so that there is enough ventilation. A coop without proper ventilation can smell very bad and be unhealthy for the chickens.

Protection

Coyotes, foxes, birds of prey, and raccoons all love chickens. Because they have so many predators, it is important to use a wire mesh around the outside to ensure their safety. Build the coop with sturdy material and be sure to padlock the door.

Watertight and Shade

Make sure your coop is waterproof to ensure their comfortability during the wetter seasons. There should always be a shaded area for the chickens during the warmer seasons. Chickens do not enjoy being too hot or too cold.

Egg Access and Decoration

It is important that you design your coop in a way that allows for EASY access to gather eggs. Give your chickens a healthy and happy home by decorating the coop with plants and greenery.
